Dog-eared Bible
be a virtuous woman
priced far above rubies
long skirt
buttoned blouse
because modest means
never too much
…makeup
…independence
…ambition
Dog-eared Bible
Paul to the women:
submit yourselves
to your Father
then your husband
in church
at home
turn the other cheek
keep silent
“God, where is my husband?”
Virgin wife;
perpetual child
cook and clean
on your knees
swallow your anger
quick and fumbling
sex on demand
Now you’re a mom
holding your daughter
and promising her
You will never be
too much
Be loud
Be free
Be ambitious
Be Black
and be
Whole.
